Dental Associates to Open New Waukesha Clinic

On Monday, July 11 at 7 a.m., Dental Associates will open its doors and begin seeing patients at its new, state-of-the-art dental center at 1211 Dolphin Ct. in Waukesha. The 21,571-square-foot clinic, which is conveniently located at the intersection of Hwy. 164 and E. Main St., features a sleek glassy rotunda and attractive brick exterior. Inside, the clinic has a spacious lobby, stone fireplace and is flooded with natural light to create a warm and inviting space for patients. The opening marks Dental Associates’ sixth dental center in the Milwaukee area.

“We have a dynamic model of patient care that we’re excited to share with Waukesha County residents,” says Thomas Manos, D.D.S, M.S., president and owner of Dental Associates, Wisconsin’s largest family-owned dental group practice. “A high-tech facility like our Waukesha clinic is part of our vision to provide comprehensive, affordable, top-quality dental services to residents throughout the area.”

The Waukesha location will provide a comprehensive suite of dental services – general dentistry, pediatric, orthodontic and surgical care – to meet the needs of children, teens, adults and seniors. Initially, the clinic will include a total of 20 team members, consisting of dentists, hygienists, and dental technicians.

The Waukesha clinic will feature convenient iPad check-in and medical history gathering, electronic medical records that allow patients to visit any Dental Associates location for care, private consultation rooms, quiet rooms for patients who need additional privacy and dual in-room monitors so patients can easily view their x-rays or watch educational oral care videos.

Each patient will have their own dental team that includes a dentist, dental hygienist and dental technician who they see each time they visit. If additional services are required, the patient’s dentist will consult with the on-site specialist to create an individualized plan of care, based on the patient’s specific needs.

“During the last few years, we’ve worked hard to bring continual improvements and innovations to our clinics and patients,” says Dr. Manos. “We’re constantly pushing ourselves to be the best and most trusted provider of dental services in Wisconsin.”

In 2014, the company began posting Press Ganey patient evaluations of its dentists and clinics on its website and was awarded the prestigious Press Ganey Leaders in Transparency Award. Press Ganey, an independent, nationally-recognized health care data company, conducts the patient surveys.

Founded in 1973, Dental Associates is Wisconsin’s largest family-owned dental group practice with 13 clinics throughout the state and nearly 800 staff members, including 100 doctors and 629 operatories. The company plans to open its 14th dental center in Howard, near Green Bay, in August 2016. Dental Associates provides complete family dental services, both general and specialty dentistry, under one roof, from pediatric dentistry to specialized dental services for older adults, with a focus on excellent care that is affordable, accessible and personalized. Dental Associates is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dental Associates is the exclusive provider of CarePlus Dental Plans, which allows the company to provide affordable and high-quality dental health care to all Wisconsin residents.

“Giving back has always been a pillar of Heartland Dental, both in donating to worthy causes here in the Effingham community and nationwide,” said Rick Workman, DMD, founder and active executive chairman at Heartland Dental. “I’m tremendously proud of what we were able to give back this year. The dedication of all our supported dentists and team members made it possible. I can’t wait to continue this trend into the New Year.”

As dentists, that is their mission – to support the health and livelihood of the communities they serve. These opportunities help them reach out to even more patients in need, showcase their commitment, build long-lasting, positive reputations and unite their teams under the same cause and mindset,” added Dr. Workman. “I’m thrilled that so many Heartland Dental supported offices are donating their time and effort to help those who do not have regular access to dental care.”

ADSO Announces Steve Thorne as President

Association of Dental Support Organizations Announces

Stephen E.  Thorne as President

Dr. Rick Workman to Serve as Vice President on the Executive Committee

November 17, 2015—The Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) announced that Stephen E. Thorne, IV, Pacific Dental Services® Founder, President and CEO, has been elected to serve as President of ADSO. Dr. Rick Workman, ADSO Founding Member and CEO of Heartland Dental, is the immediate past President and will serve as Vice President of the Executive Committee.

“Rick has been a leader in our industry for years and has been nothing short of masterful as ADSO’s President the past two years,” said Thorne.  “We have been fortunate to have him at the helm and are grateful that he will remain in a leadership role for the association.   I look forward to building on Rick’s work in positioning ADSO as the preeminent organization for the DSO industry and its industry partners.”

Thorne began his work in the healthcare business arena in 1989 when his father, a dentist, offered him a job managing a struggling dental office. That first office became a big success, and Thorne continued to work with his father for several years before venturing out on his own and creating Pacific Dental Services (PDS®). PDS currently provides business and administrative services to nearly 500 supported practices throughout the country including California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Utah, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee, and Minnesota.

Thorne was instrumental in forming ADSO, which is the largest association of dental support organizations in America and served as its President the first three years.   He graduated from the University of California Los Angeles with a major in Economics-Business, and  he earned his Master’s Degree in Health Administration from Chapman University.

In addition to Thorne being named President and Workman being named Vice President, the Executive Committee added three new Board members: John Cline, CEO STX Healthcare Management; Steve Spellman, CEO Midwest Dental; and Ken Cooper, CEO, North American Dental Group.

DSOs provide administrative non-clinical support to dental practices, enabling supported dentists to focus on their patients and expand access to oral healthcare while maintaining the highest in industry standards.   ADSO supports its members through research, education and advocacy; enabling them to foster innovation, collaboration and a vibrant market where DSO-supported dentists can provide quality oral health care.

ADSO Statement on AB 368/SB 327

AB 368/SB 327 is Unnecessary and Could Reduce Access to Dental Care

The Wisconsin legislature is considering legislation (AB 368) that would give the Wisconsin Board of Dental Examiners unchecked regulatory authority over non-dentist business entities that do not provide clinical care to patients.  The broad scope of authority provided to the dental  board by AB 368/SB 327 is inappropriate and would having a disruptive and chilling effect on dental support organizations (DSOs) that have operated in Wisconsin for more than 30 years and account for nearly 1,000 jobs.

Wisconsin does not need more burdensome and unnecessary regulation placed on businesses by a state agency designed to regulate dentists, not private businesses.

DSOs provide dentists with a choice on how they manage their dental practice by offering a wide array of administrative services, thus allowing the dentist to concentrate on the clinical practice of dentistry.  The dentist is responsible for all clinical aspects of running a dental practice, including providing dental care to patients; managing clinical staff; and the ownership and management of patient records.  The DSO manages non-clinical functions for the dentist, including accounting services; inventory management, facility maintenance, providing state of the art equipment; providing non-clinical support staff; and human resource management.

DSO’s support 131 dental practices in the State of Wisconsin that have provided dental services to more than 1 million patients over the past year, including more than 5,500 Medicaid beneficiaries.  Supported practices are often able to provide more flexible hours of operation for patients, including after hours and on weekends.  Most importantly, the services DSOs provide allow dentists to focus on their patients, which expands access to dental care for Wisconsin residents. Additional regulation is unnecessary and will only increase expenses and decrease access to affordable and convenient dental care for the state residents.

AB 368/SB 327 is a solution in search of a problem.  It will result in dentists having fewer choices in how they manage their practice and, in turn, reduce access to dental care for the people of Wisconsin.

ADSO is a 501(c)(6) non-profit trade association representing more than 40 DSO companies.   ADSO supports its members through research, education and advocacy; enabling them to foster innovation, collaboration and a vibrant market where DSO-supported dentists can provide quality oral health care.
